In the version of GE1 (→FE→EE), one can see Chopin's proofreading: thanks to the dotted rhythm a clear echo of the characteristic initial motif of this movement is created. However, the motif, wherever it appears, is never separated with slurs into two parts, as it happens here. This would call into question the authenticity of this version: perhaps it is simply a mistake of the engraver or maybe even an intentional, arbitrary change introduced out of a conviction that the notation of A is inaccurate (another questionable change of this type is to be found in the Sonata in B
minor, Op. 35, 3rd mov., bar 14). A possible mistake of GE1 is also supported by the layout of the text, practically excluding any correction of rhythm at this place.
The sign written by Chopin in this place in FED (a diagonal cross characteristic for his teaching entries) is an evidence of certain verbal remarks of Chopin; they could have concerned rhythmic issues.
GE2 restored the version of A.
