b. 135

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Crotchet e in A (→GE)

Dotted minim in FE (→EE)

..

Extending the value of e is undoubtedly a result of the Chopin proofreading of FE (→EE).

Slur in A (possible reading→GEFE) & EE2 (→EE3)

No slur in EE1

Slur in A, reading suggested by the editors

..

The range and placement of the slur in A are unclear. According to us, it may refer to the quavers in the top voice, as it was interpreted in the editions (except for EE1, in which the slur was overlooked) but also to the crotchet of the bottom voice, leading to the b minim in the next bar. Analysing also the notation of an analogous fragment of the recapitulation (bars 283-284) as well as a few other aspects of notation and structure of music, we decided to adopt the second possibility to the main text.

b. 135

Long accent between in A

Short L.H. accent in GE

No mark in FE (→EE)

Long R.H. accent suggested by the editors

..

The long accent in A is written in the middle between the staves, so it is unknown to which hand it should be assigned. A comparison with analogous bar 283 proves that Chopin most probably meant accenting the R.H. In GE it was assigned to the L.H. (as a short accent) and in FE (→EE) it was overlooked.

Slur in A (literal reading→GEFEEE)

Slur in A, contextual interpretation

..

The slur in A is misleading – placed over the crotchets of the bottom voice, yet it clearly indicates the b minim as its beginning. The doubt is dissipated – to the favour of a slur combining the crotchets – by a slur in analogous bar 284.

Slur to e2 in A, contextual interpretation

Slur to e2 in A (possible interpretation→GEFEEE)

..

According to us, the slur of A, extended by Chopin until the bar line, was supposed to lead to fat the beginning of bar 137. However, its range is not entirely clear, which was reproduced in GE – the slur in bar 136, at the end of the line, suggests a continuation, which is however absent in bar 137. We assume – same as FE (→EE) – that it means separated slurs, which are at the same time an alternative possibility of interpreting A.
