composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

In the 2nd half of the bar the bottom notes of the chords in the R.H. – these which require ledger lines in the notation in the treble clef – in all sources, except for EE, is placed on the bottom stave. The b note in the middle chord does not require an accidental, although a cautionary is undoubtedly indicated here (it was added in GE2). In EE the notes were moved to the top stave (same as in our transcriptions), however, the which was necessary in this situation was not added. As a result, EE has here an undoubtedly erroneous chord with a b instead of b. The cautionary flats before e1 and d1 were added by us. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Errors in EE , GE revisions |

FE1 (→FE2) has a b-e1 minim here. The mistake resulted from an erroneous assignment of these notes to the bottom stave, where the bass clef is in force – the mistake's mechanism is easy to understand, looking at the notation of GC (most probably very similar to the notation of [A]). The mistake was corrected in FE3 (→FE4) and EE, mostly likely as a result of Chopin's intervention. GC (→GE) includes the correct text. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections of EE |

The version of FE1 (→FE2) is certainly erroneous, which is proved by Chopin proofreading in FE3 (→FE4) and FESch. The correct version of EE can also be a result of Chopin's correcting the base text to this edition. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Errors in FE , Authentic corrections of FE , Annotations in FESch |

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

The c note present at the beginning of bars 59 and 63 in GC (→GE) and FE1 (→FE2) is the original version of the bass in these bars. Chopin changed them to e in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4), in the base text to EE and FESch. In the corresponding bar of the recapitulation (bar 187), the fifth as the base of chord is present accordingly in all sources. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections of EE , Annotations in FESch |

The version of FE (→EE) is probably erroneous – cf. analogous bar 188 as well as a slightly extended variant of this motif in bars 64 and 192. The absence of a correction in this place is, however, puzzling – Chopin did not pay attention to this note both in the detailed proofreading of FE2 (twice – as the base text to EE and FE3) and in the proofreading of FE4, as well as in the pupil's copies. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE |
