FE1 (→FE2) has a b-e1 minim here. This patent mistake, resulting from a misunderstanding of the notation of [A] (cf. the notation of GC, in particular the placement of the notes between the staves and the stem looking upwards), was corrected in FE3 (→FE4) and EE, probably as a result of Chopin's intervention. The engraver of GE interpreted his base text (GC) correctly.
One can ponder why such a striking error was not corrected in FESch, considering the fact the copy includes a Chopin correction already in the next bar (as well as in bars 59 and 63). According to us, Chopin corrected only these errors or original versions he heard during a lesson, as the performing pupil did not see any reason to change anything in them. The erroneous version in bar 57 sounds so awkward that it was probably corrected by a pupil herself.
