b. 17-20

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Two  in GC, interpretation

No signs in FE (→EE1)

One  in GE # EE2

Four  suggested by the editors

..

The  hairpin in bars 17-18 is written in GC (by Chopin?) in a way that is impossible to literally reproduce it in print and at the same time its meaning is ambiguous. Are the signs supposed to concern both voices of the R.H. or only one (which?)? Not having found a satisfactory answer to these questions, in the main text we adopt a solution applied by Chopin in similar bars 33-36. We also suggest adding a hairpin in bars 19-20. In the remaining sources the signs are absent, except for GE (and EE2) in bar 18.

b. 21-22

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 in GC (→GE) & EE2

No sign in FE (→EE1)

Our variant suggestion

..

The  hairpin, present in GC (→GE, added also in EE2), is suggested by us in the main text in a variant form, as it is highly likely that a later dynamic indication of FE (→EE) in bars 22-24 may be considered to be complete, defining the next pair of dynamically contrasted bars – cf. bars 17-20.

b. 25-27

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

5 accents in GC

2 accents in FE (→EE1)

3 accents in GE

4 accents in EE2

..

Only in GC the accents are written in these bars without mistakes. FE (→EE1) overlooked 3 accents in bars 26-27, whereas GE omitted accents in the 2nd half of bars 25 and 26. The notation of EE2 is a result of overlapping of the signs adopted from FE and GE.

b. 33

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

No mark in all sources

Accent suggested by the editors

..

The missing accent on the 2nd quaver must be considered an inaccuracy of notation (most probably Chopin's inadvertence in [A]). The accent is present in identical b. 35 as well as in a rhythmically analogous situation in each of the remaining bars of the section encompassing b. 25-36.

b. 34-36

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

3 accaents in GC & FE (→EE)

in GE1

in GE2

..

The accents in these bars are in GE extended to form  hairpins. This inaccuracy could have resulted from Chopin's placing them – in contrast to bars 25-32 – below the notes, apparently associating them with neighbouring  signs. The sign in bar 35, omitted in GE1, was reinstated in GE2 as a hairpin like the other two.
