The sign was added in GC (→GE) probably by Chopin. It can be assumed that it indicates sustention of pedal throughout four bars. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: No pedal release mark |

It is hard to state which of the sources guessed the sense of the notation of [A] more accurately. It is highly likely that even seeing the autograph, we would not be sure how to assign the sign, as in the case of the lower placed notes, Chopin would often put these signs before the note and not under it, which sometimes resulted in ambiguities. In the discussed bar, both pedalling versions are possible; to the main text we adopt the less schematic version. The absence of in GC is a patent oversight. category imprint: Differences between sources |

It is not certain which pedalling is compatible with Chopin's intention. From the practical point of view, both are possible. category imprint: Differences between sources |

No in FE is rather of an accidental nature, although the pedal can be sustained longer than it results from the notation of GC (→GE). It is confirmed by the sign added in EE, which can come from Chopin (which does not mean that it was reproduced accurately – perhaps Chopin wrote it slightly earlier, e.g., on the 3rd beat of the bar). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Inaccuracies in FE , No pedal release mark |
