Issues : Errors in FE

b. 168

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

Pedalling in A, EEC, EEW2, GE2op (→GE3op) & #GE3no2

No markings in FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEW1)

..

The absence of pedalling in this bar is undoubtedly a mistake of the engraver of FE (→GE1op,GE1no2,EEW1). At the last appearance of this section, more mistakes in reproduction of the pedalling were committed in FE, which may be related to the necessity of working on two pages of the manuscript at the same time (cf. bars 173-174 and 188).

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

g-c1-e1 in A (→FEEE,GE1no2,GE1opGE2opGE3op)

g-e1 in GE2no2

..

Same as in bar 42, the triad version of the majority of the sources, reproducing – perhaps inaccurately – the difficult to decipher notation of A, is, according to us, most probably erroneous.

b. 173-174

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

 in bar 174 in A, GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

in bar 173 in FE (→EE,GE1op,GE1no2)

..

The discrepancy in the placement of the  sign between A and FE is, according to us, a result of a mistake at combining the written out bars with their numerated repetitions – the shorter pedal of FE is compatible with the authentic pedalling in bars 189-190. In the main text, we stick to the version of A. The changes in later GE were introduced most probably by analogy to bars 45-46 and 109-110 (see also bars 189-190).

Pedalling in A, EEW2, GE2op (→GE3op) & GE2no2

The absence of pedalling in a part of the editions is undoubtedly a consequence of an oversight of the engraver of FE.

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

Longer  in A

Shorter  in FE (→EE)

No sign in GE

..

The absence of the sign in GE most probably means that it was originally absent also in FE, in which it was however added – perhaps by Chopin – in the last stage of proofreadings of FE. In the main text we give the sign written in A in these bars, slightly longer than in the previous appearances of this phrase.
