composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

..

Initially, Chopin – in AT and AW – considered Agitato to be a more important indication characterising the Etude than Presto, which he wrote only in AT. However, eventually, while preparing the work for print, he decided to leave Presto only. According to us, it can reflect the change of the piece's character, perhaps together with clarification of the concept of the entire opus.
In the earlier manuscripts there is no metronome tempo.

b. 1

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

No indication in AT

sempre sotto voce in AW

in CDP, GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

In AW the only indication concerning dynamics is sempre sotto voce, written under the part of the L.H. In the version prepared for print, Chopin replaced it with a  indication, referring to both hands.

b. 1

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

legatiss. in AT

sempre legatissimo in AW

molto legato in CDP, FE & EE

molto legato in GC

molto legato in GE

..

In the main text we include the molto legato indication in bar 1 (in accordance with GC), yet between the staves, as it is in FE and EE, out of which one was most probably based on [A]. This is how we perhaps recreate the notation of [A], as such an arrangement was impossible to be recreated in the sources based on this autograph in a graphically satisfying manner.

b. 36-37

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

No indication in AW

in CDP, GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

Chopin added the dynamic indication only in [A], yet still early enough for it to be copied both in CDP and in GC, and most probably also in the second, lost Stichvorlage copy. Similarly in bars 39-40. In turn, Chopin abandoned the agogic change in the final version – see bars 38-40
