b. 49

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

No slurs in A

Slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The absence of slurs in A is an evident oversight of Chopin, who did not entirely consider which elements of notation of this bar should be written and which are already subject to the abbreviated indication of this and the subsequent bars – cf. the next note. The slurs were added in the proofreading of FE1, most probably on the basis of Chopin entry in the proofreading copy.

We add the pedalling in bar 92 – Chopin most probably forgot about the indications in the manuscript and overlooked this place while proofreading FE1

It is difficult to clearly state whether in A the last chord in the R.H. includes an element placed on the bottom stave and if it does, which one it is. According to us, a bolder stem next to a possible note is not a deletion, yet blurred ink. Due to the fact that it faces up, the blurred note was probably an a. FE1 printed here b, only the proofreading of FE2 indicated that Chopin thought about a, same as in bar 84. However, the erroneous version of FE1 was adopted in all GE.

b. 153-155

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

Slurs in bar 155 in A (→FE)

R.H. slurs in GE1

4 slurs in EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4

..

Bar 153 is marked in A as repetition of bar 49. However, contrary to that bar, here FE did not complete the slurs in the 1st half of the bar, which has to be considered to be an oversight. GE1 added a slur in the R.H. only, the remaining editions – both. In bar 155 there is no slur in the L.H. in GE1, which is probably an oversight of the engraver.
