b. 13-14

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor
..
It is unclear whether the slurs of AI are an inaccurately written version of whole-bar slurs of the first editions or whether they were meant to be shorter in Chopin's intention, embracing only these three notes. We adopt the second interpretation, taking into account the fact that the undoubtedly whole-bar slur in bar 15 in AI is clearly longer. b. 15-17
|
composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

The slur in the L.H. in AI and FE (→GE,EE) embraces only two bars (in AI the beginning and the end are not precisely indicated). In FES Chopin extended the slur until D in bar 17. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources |

b. 15
|
composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor
..
In the main text we give the whole-bar slur of AI, compatible with the adopted slurring of the previous bars. However, the shorter slur of FE (→GE,EE) may be considered as equally musically justified due to the hold of the last c2, creating a syncopation. b. 16-17

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

The slur combining the octave with the semiquavers in bar 17 was added in pencil – probably by Chopin – in FED. Cf. the note on the slur in the L.H. category imprint: Differences between sources |
