b. 16-17

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No slur in AI & FE (→GE,EE)

Slur written into FED

Our variant suggestion

..

The slur combining the octave with the semiquavers in bar 17 was added in pencil – probably by Chopin – in FED. Cf. the note on the slur in the L.H.

b. 16

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

..

We add a cautionary  before B. The sign was added already in GE1a (→GE2GE3GE4GE5) and EE4.

b. 17

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

..

FE (→EE) has a  only before the upper note of the third in the middle of the bar. The sign before c1 is completely unnecessary here, however, the undoubtedly necessary  raising to a is missing. AI has the correct text, the mistake was also corrected in GE.

b. 17-18

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No fingering in AI & FE (→GE)

Fingering in EE

..

In the fingering added in EE Fontana avoids the 1st finger on black keys.

Slur in FE

Slurs in AI, GE & EE, probable interpretation of FE

..

The slur in bar 17, despite that in AI it starts only from the 3rd semiquaver, is certainly to be understood as a whole-bar slur.
In FE, both the end of the slur in bar 17 (at the end of the page) and the beginning of the next one in bar 18 suggest continuation, hence a slurring similar to the one in the editions in bars 9-10. However, this interpretation is not confirmed neither by the slurs of AI in this place nor by the clearly separated slurs of the editions in analogous bars 19-20 and 21-22. Therefore, in the main text we give separated slurs. The notation of FE was considered as inaccurate already in GE and EE.
