EE3 - Corrected impression of [EE2]

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: 1835-1836
Title: Douze Grandes Etudes || No. X
Dedication: ses amis J. Liszt et Ferd. Hiller

In the first English edition the entire Opus 10 is divided into two books, six Etudes each, while the presented copy belongs to the earliest known impression of the second book. In spite of this, we assign it the EE3 symbol, as on the basis of comparison with the sources of the first book, it may be assumed that there had been two earlier impressions which we mark as [EE1] and [EE2] (see the Etude in C major, No. 7).

EE3 reproduces the text of FE1, in which a number of errors (e.g., in bars 8 and 38) and inaccuracies were corrected, e.g.:  marks were added in bars 16, 42 and 70, even the entire pedalling in bar 67, accidentals were completed, e.g., naturals in bars 5 and 8, the rhythmic notation of a1 in bar 76 was changed. The accuracy of other interventions is less obvious – one of the accents in bar 4 was omitted, a tie sustaining f1 in bars 52-53 was added.

In certain situations an oversight or a mistake seem to be more plausible than a revision, e.g., omitting the  mark in bar 54.

In accordance with the information on the title page – "edited with additional fingering by his pupil, I. Fontana" – Chopin's fingering was significantly completed in EE3 (in 17 bars in total), see the note to bars 1-4.

EE3 was renewed on a number of occasions with different covers – see the Etude in C major, No. 7.
