Pedalling

b. 1-32

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

 in A

 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In those bars, the pedal release asterisks are put in A usually at the end of the bar, after the 3rd crotchet of the L.H. (with the exception of bar 17 and analog. and the 1st volta of bar 32). In  GE (→FEEE) all the signs were printed under the 3rd crotchet which suggests – against A – the need of rhythmic release of the pedal in that moment. The problem also occurs in the second part  of the Mazurka.

FES has pencil marks in every one of those bars, yet their meaning is difficult to decipher.

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

No  in A (→GE1FE)

 in EE and GE2 (→GE3)

The absence of  here is certainly a mistake on the part of Chopin, who did mark the moment of pedal release in analogous bars 17, 25 and 29. Therefore we include that mark, which was earlier done in EE and GE2 (→GE3).

b. 28

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

 in A and GE2 (→GE3)

GE1 (→FE)

..

In our main text we give the unambiguous text of A. The inaccurate notation of GE1 (→FE) resulted in a clearly erroneous notation of EE. In GE2 (→GE3) the erroneous placement of the  sign was corrected.

b. 29

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

 in A

In A, the  mark is placed a little earlier than in analogous bars 17 and 25. In the editors' opinion, this notation does not suggest that Chopin wanted to have different pedalling here. Therefore in the main text we give the pedalling in line with analogous bars and GE (→FEEE).
