EE3 - Corrected impression of [EE2]

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: 1835-1836
Title: Douze Grandes Etudes || No. IX
Dedication: ses amis J. Liszt et Ferd. Hiller

In the first English edition the entire Opus 10 is divided into two books, six Etudes each, while the presented copy belongs to the earliest known impression of the second book. In spite of this, we assign it the EE3 symbol, as on the basis of comparison with the sources of the first book, it may be assumed that there had been two earlier impressions which we mark as [EE1] and [EE2] (see the Etude in C major, No. 7).

EE3 reproduces the text of FE1, in which the errors (in bar 8, octave sign in bar 28 and  in bar 32) and some of the inaccuracies (e.g., in bars 20-21, 22) were corrected. Not every intervention of this kind may be considered as accurate, e.g., additions of pedalling in bar 22 and 64-65 and 67 most probably do not coincide with Chopin's intention. At the same time, own failures were not avoided, e.g., omission of slurs in bar 8 or fingering in bar 17.

In accordance with the information on the title page – "edited with additional fingering by his pupil, I. Fontana" – in EE3 Chopin's fingering was significantly completed (in 38 bars in total), see the note to bars 1-9.

EE3 was renewed on a number of occasions with different covers – see the Etude in C major, No. 7.
