b. 173

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

c1 in A (→FE1,EE,GCGE1GE2

in FE2 (→FE3) & GE3

..

A (→FE1,EE,GCGE1GE2) has a c1-ffourth as the 2nd quaver. A comparison with analogous bar 169 points to a highly likely Chopin's error, which is proven by Chopin's proofreading of FE2 (→FE3). The correct version, most probably based on the mentioned analogy, was introduced also in GE3

b. 173

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

In GC (→GE) Chopin added cautionary naturals next to b2 in the R.H. and in the L.H. Such a double addition virtually excludes the possibility of a mistake – it is about neither restoring d2 in the R.H. nor a cautionary  before the L.H. g1. The composer presumably forgot that a  from the key signature is no longer effective. In the main text we omit these accidentals, adding a cautionary  before g1 instead.

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

We add a cautionary  before d3 in the first semiquaver.in the main text. We also omit the needlessly repeated  before g2 in the 2nd half of the bar.

b. 176

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

Chopin omitted a  lowering b2 to b2 at the beginning of bar, and a  restoring b1 in the 2nd half of bar. An oversight of both the alteration and its canceling may seem improbable but happened to Chopin a few times, e.g. in Etude in F minor, op. 25 no. 2, bar 56.

We add a cautionary  before b1 in the L.H. In the analogous bar 172 the homologous  occurs in all the sources.
