Slurs

b. 232-235

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

Slur in FEG

Slur in FE

Slur in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

Slur in GE1

..

The range of the slur written by Chopin into FEG is difficult to evaluate on the basis of the available photocopy. The reading in GE1 suggests it might have actually been longer than its today visible part. Taking into consideration the phrase structure and slurring of the analogous phrases in bars 245-260 and 89-103, we deem three out of all source-based slurring justified: FEG, FE and EE (GE2, GE3). In the main text we accept the latter because both the starting and ending points of this slur appear in more than one authentic source: the phrase mark begins from the semiquaver  in FEG and EE, and it reaches bar 235 in FE and EE.

b. 234-235

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

Slur in FE0 (→FE,FEGGE1)

Slur in EE

No slur in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The short slur between the last semiquaver in bar 234 and the first note in bar 235, printed in FE0 (→FE,GE1), and reproduced also in EE (in a probably revised form), is presumably a remnant of the original, negligent and incomplete slurring of [A]. The notation in FE and GE1 does not seem likely to be faithful to the original script, either—EE is possibly closer to it. In the main text we omit this slur, regarding longer phrase marks added by Chopin in the basis for EE and in the proofreading of FE as intended to replace this short slur. This is, however, not so obvious in case of FEG in which the written slur does not seemingly embrace the ending of bar 234. Therefore, if a shortest version of the slur in bars 232-234 is adopted, then  the discussed short slur is recommended to be taken into consideration (in the EE version).

b. 235

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

No slur in FEG (→GE1)

Slur in FE1, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

To the main text we adopt the ending of the slur of FE1, EE and GE2 (→GE3), which according to Chopin's intention was to replace the previous incomplete slurring.

b. 257-261

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

No slurs in FE0

One slur in FE1

Two slurs in EE

Three slurs in GE

..

Chopin introduced three slurs in bars 257-261 in FEG (→GE). It is hard to assume whether the lack of the last slur in EE is a result of Chopin's oversight or a possible error of the engraver. FE has one long slur, most probably added by Chopin in the proofreading.
