b. 282

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

a2-c3 in FE (→GE1,EE)

a2 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The version of GE2 (→GE3) is most probably revised – c3 on the 4th quaver was removed in order to homogenise the bar with the previous one. The version could have been intended by Chopin if we were to admit that the third in this place is an error of the engraver and that Chopin did not pay attention to it neither in FEG nor in the proofreading of FE and base text to EE and the pupils' copies.

b. 284-285

composition: Op. 42, Waltz in A♭ major

a & A in FE0

e & A1 in FE1 & FEG (→GE)

e & A1 in FED (L.H.)

a & octave in EE

..

Chopin changed the original version of FE0 to a more virtuoso one and with fuller sound in FEG (→GE) and FE. The different version of EE is most probably authentic as well, while the enhancement and expansion of the sound (with respect to the original version) was reached by the undoubtedly easier pianistic grip. In the main text we give the version of two editions, FE and GE, confirmed somehow by the entry in FED indicating to take over e by the L.H. (cf. bars 283-284).

Third in EE

..

The third on the 1st quaver is certainly a mistake of FE0 (→EE) – Chopin corrected it in FEG (→GE) and in the finished FE.
