b. 17

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

No mark in A

Wedge in FE (→GE1,EE)

Dot in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

In A Chopin omitted the staccato mark in the middle of bar 17, probably due to corrections. We consider the wedge added in a proofreading of FE (→GE1,EE) to be a binding indication of Chopin's intention in this respect. In GE2 (→GE3GE4) the wedge was replaced with a dot.

b. 19

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

No mark in A (→FE)

Wedge in GE1

Dot in GE2 (→GE3GE4) & EE

..

Lack of the staccato mark in the middle of bar 19 in A (→FE) should rather be considered to be an inaccuracy. On the other hand, it is not certain which of the signs that appear in this fragment – dot or wedge – would have been used by Chopin if he had noticed this deficiency. In the main text we give preference to the wedge, as Chopin added this sign, while proofreading similar bar 17 in FE. The signs were added by the revisers of GE and EE – wedge in GE1, dot in EE and subsequent GE,s.

b. 21

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

No mark in A (→FEEE)

Dot in GE

..

Lack of the staccato dot under the 1st quaver in A (→FEEE) must be considered as an oversight – cf. bar 23. The mark was added in GE.

b. 22

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

..

In FE the dot extending was omitted, as a result of which the bar in the L.H. has only 11 semiquavers. It is either a simple oversight (cf. bar 26) or a result of a misunderstanding at the time of proofreading (the wrong dot was removed? – see the adjacent remark). The mistake was corrected both in GE and in EE.

End of slur in A

FE (→EE), literal reading

Probable interpretation of FE (→GE)

..

In A the slur reaches only until in the 2nd half of the bar. In turn, in FE (→EE) it goes beyond the last note, as if it were to be continued in the next bar. According to us, both versions of the notation are inaccurate.
