b. 49-50

The main difficulty is posed by interpreting the inaccurate slurring of FE. The ending of the slur in bar 49, suggesting a continuation, may be simply inaccurate (as in the R.H.; this is how it was interpreted in EE); however, it cannot be excluded that Chopin actually wanted to lead the slur to the 1st octave in bar 50. In the latter, the beginning of the slur in bar 50 could be considered as an inaccurate reproduction of the version of A (a slur from the 2nd quaver in the bar) or as an inaccurately written continuation of the previous slur (the version of GE). We consider the 1st possibility to be the most plausible interpretation of the notation of FE, in which the slur in bars 50-52 is considered to be authentic, being probably a result of Chopin's correction in this form (see bars 51-52).

Taking into account the aforementioned ambiguity of the notation of FE, in the main text we give the version of A, which is undoubtedly authentic and which does not raise any performance doubts.
