b. 28

 in A

FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we give the  hairpins on the basis of A. The marks, written by Chopin's hand and coherent with the indications of the analogous phrase in bars 25-26, do not raise any doubts. Moving the  mark under the stave in FE (→GE,EE) could have been a result of graphic difficulties (lack of space), yet this extension cannot be explained in this way. Perhaps Chopin introduced the mark in a proofreading of FE, as he wanted to prepare the beginning of the longer crescendo in bars 29-31 more clearly.

Crotchet in A

Dotted crotchet in FE (→GE,EE)

Our alternative suggestion

..

It is not clear at all if by leaving the 2nd half of the bar not entirely completed with rhythmic values in the upper voice, Chopin forgot about the dots extending the b1-dthird, as it was interpreted in FE (→GE,EE). Perhaps he planned to complete the bar with a rest, as in bar 26 (the scope of the figuration did not have to be the only reason for using a rest). We consider this possibility as an alternative solution.

No dashes in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In FE (→GE,EE) the dashes determining the range of stretto e cresc. were most probably overlooked.

Slurs in A

Slur in FE (→EE,GE1GE2GE3GE4)

Slur in GE5

..

The slur of A reaches the end of bar 32, yet in FE it was led until the beginning of bar 33, so that in GE and EE it reaches the 1st chord in this bar (in GE5 to the second, probably by mistake). According to us, it does not correspond to Chopin's intention. Moreover, in the editions the slur in bars 33-34 was omitted – perhaps the engraver of FE did not know, from which note to begin it.

Long accents in A

Short accents in FE (→GE)

Short accent in EE

..

The accents in A are undoubtedly long here, which was, however, erroneously reproduced in FE (→GE). In EE the second mark was omitted, certainly by accident.
