Wedge suggested by the editors

..

Lack of wedge in this place is undoubtedly a result of distraction – cf. three subsequent bars.

b. 23

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

..

Lack of the natural raising c to c in A is Chopin's patent oversight.

b. 23

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Longer slur in A (→FEGE,EE)

Our alternative suggestion

..

In the subsequent bars the slurring and articulation of semiquavers were changed by Chopin. Certain details of the intended result of these changes are not clear, while one of the possible interpretations assumes the slur to be shortened.

b. 24

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Slurs & wedge in A, interpretation

Slurs in FE

Slurs in GE & EE

Our alternative suggestion

..

In the main text we give the articulation (slurs, without staccato sign) in the 1st half of the bar on the basis of FE, which was probably proofread by Chopin. The reason why the earlier start of the slur (from the 1st note) introduced in this edition was reproduced neither in GE nor in EE remains a mystery. An alternative suggestion with a shortened slur in the 2nd half of bar 23 refers to analogous slurs of FE in bars 24-25.

b. 24-25

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Two wedges in A (→FEGE1GE1a)

Wedge in bar 24 in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

Wedge in bar 25 in EE

..

Lack of the wedges over the topmost notes in bar 24 in EE and in bar 25 in GE2-GE5 is certainly a result of the engravers' errors.
