Issues : Authentic corrections of FE

b. 22

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

..

CLI has bas the 4th semiquaver in the R.H., which results from the logic of the figuration's structure. In FE1 there is a d3, put here by mistake and corrected by Chopin in a proofreading of FE2 (→EE) for b2. The erroneous note must have initially been present also in GE1, which is confirmed by visible traces of its deletion, however, eventually GE1 and all subsequent editions of GE also feature b2.

d2d1 & d in CLI

e2e1 & e in FE (→GE,EE)

..

CLI has d2d1 and as the 4th, 8th and 12th note respectively. It is the original version, probably changed by Chopin only during a proofreading of FE (a clear sign of deleting a note in print can be seen only where the note is).

Semibreve in CLI, GE & EE

Dotted minim in FE

..

The note as a dotted minim appears only in FE, which most probably means that Chopin introduced it here instead of a semibreve only during a proofreading. Overseeing this change in EE may be explained with a mistake, revision or existence of another phase of FE's proofreading, not included in EE

g in GE

..

in GE is a mistake (it was corrected only in GE5) drawn from the review copy of FE, which is proved by the visible traces of the note's deletion in FE.

d in GE

..

The d note in GE is a result of overlapping the mistake of FE1 and revision of GE: the erroneous note adopted from FE1 (without any accidental) was completed with a  by the reviser of GE, who above all was concentrated on completing the missing accidentals, therefore, it was adjusted to the Bchord. In a proofreading of FE2 Chopin changed d into B, restoring the version which – as shown by CLI – was the only intended one from the very beginning.
