Pedalling

b. 51

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No pedalling in CLI

One pedal in FE (→GE1GE1aGE2, →EE2EE3)

Two pedals in GE3 (→GE4GE5) & EE4

..

In FE (→GE1GE1aGE2,→EE2EE3) there is no change of pedal at the transition between bars 51-52. The comparison with analogous bars 3-4 proves the engraver's error or maybe an error of Chopin himself. In the remaining editions or impressions the missing indications were added.

Pedalling in FE (→GE1GE2, →EE)

Pedalling in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In bars 53-56, 59, 61-63 and 65-66 in the main text we give Chopin's pedalling on the basis of FE (→GE,EE). In bars 57-58 FE (→GE1GE2,EE) has one pedal, which we adopt to the main text. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) there was added an arbitrary change of pedal at the transition of these bars.

 in FE

Two pedals in GE & EE4

One pedal in EE2 (→EE3)

..

In this context lack of  in FE must be considered as the notation's inaccuracy, therefore, in the main text we propose to complete it. At the same time, we claim the solution proposed in GE and EE4 (two pedals changed in the middle of the bar) to be correct. In EE2 (→EE3) the pedal release mark was simply added at the end of the bar.

Our suggestion

..

According to us, it is better to perform the 2nd half of the bar with pedal, therefore, we suggest to add the authentic indications of FE (→GE,EE).
