b. 25-26

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

Two  signs in Ap

 in FE (→GE)

Accent in EE2, interpretation

Two accents in EE3 (→EE4), interpretation

..

The  hairpins added in one of the later proofreadings of FE (→GE) should be, according to us, interpreted as diminuendo (in pair with the  sign in the previous bar). However, it must be said that FE also reproduces a few unequivocal long accents in a similar way. This is exactly how the sign was understood in EE and, moreover, in EE3 (→EE4) a similar accent was arbitrarily added in analogous place in bar 26.
Ap has  in both bars, while in bar 25 the sign is put clearly earlier than in FE.

Wedges & dots in Ap

Dots in FEcor

Dot in FE (→GE,EE

..

In the main text we give three staccato dots, at the beginning of bars 25-27, written by Chopin in FEcor. In finished FE (→GE,EE) only the dot in bar 26 was printed. Ap displays a richer set of staccato markings.

Accents in Ap

..

It is not clear whether the accents in Ap are supposed to concern both hands or only the octaves in the L.H. We also conserve the significant difference in the accents' length, although its meaning is unclear. The signs – also those on the 4th beat of the bar – are not included in FE (→GE,EE), in which Chopin decided to mark a broader dynamic change.

Long accent in FEcor

 hairpin in FE (→GE,EE

..

The unequivocal long accent, written by Chopin in FEcor, was erroneously recreated as a diminuendo mark in FE (→GE,EE). Although the  hairpins are also in Ap, there is no  at the beginning of bar 30 there.

Accents in Ap

..

In the main text we do not consider the accents of Ap, as in the version prepared for printing Chopin avoided overloading the text of the Etude with detailed indications.
