Verbal indications

b. 19-21

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No indications in CLI & Ap

in FE (→GE,EE

..

In FEcor (FEGE,EE) Chopin wrote the reminder about the upper voice's articulation twice – in bars 19 and 21. The hint in bar 19 is justified with the beginning of a new section of the piece, particularly in a situation when in bar 18 a group of semiquavers was embraced with a slur. In turn, the reason to repeat the indication in bar 21 was probably the beginning of a new page in FE, similarly as in bar 11. Cf. also the remark concerning dynamic markings.

The  hint at the beginning of the bar is both in Ap and in the editions (added in one of the later proofreadings of FE). However, the presence of the sign in FE (→GE,EE) raise doubts whether Chopin's intention was correctly reproduced.

b. 19-23

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

 in Ap

poco a poco cresc. in FE (→GE,EE

..

It is unclear whether poco a poco cresc. given in the main text twice – after FE (→GE,EE) – is supposed to be understood as two waves of a dynamic build-up or only one. The repetition of the indication may have just resulted from the fact that in FE a new page begins in bar 21 (cf. the remark concerning bars 19-21). However, the dynamic markings of Ap – particularly the repeated  in bar 21 – advocate for two waves.
In this place, as an alternative to the indications of the printed version, we give only these indications of Ap, which are totally incompatible with them. The remaining ones are discussed in the remarks concerning bars 19-23, 20-22 and 21.

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No marking in CLIFE (→GE,EE

visible in Ap may be considered as detailing the notation of FE (→GE,EE), indicating the starting point of the second crescendo wave. However, as the indications do not specify the absolute dynamic level in this place, it is quite probable that the second part of the progression was supposed to begin in meno piano, according to Chopin's intention.

b. 25-26

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

Two  in Ap

The  indication in bar 25, added by Chopin in one of the last proofreadings of FE, is also in Ap, in which Chopin even repeated it in the next bar.
