Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

EE

The fingering of the R.H. written in A is precise in a number of places: in bar 9, 11, 13, 75-80, 86 and 88-92, yet in others it requires from the performer a certain dose of invention in comparing and analysing similar figures: in bars 1-8, 14, 25, 28, 47-50, 71-72 and 93 (with a mistake).

In a proofreading of FE (→GE), Chopin completed the hints of A in bars 1, 4, 7-8, 12, 14-16, 25-30, 47-51, 61, 67-68, 71-72, 75-78, 80, 82-83 and 93. Generally, these additions develop and specify the fingering which was less carefully marked in A, yet there are also changes (bars 14 and 90) and errors (e.g., in bar 75). Moreover, Chopin added hints which are unrelated to the fingering written in A: in bars 37-38, 41, 44-46, 51-53 and 73-74. The last category also includes bar 81, in which the fingering added in FE varies from the authentic fingering indicated in a few similar places.

In EE, Fontana would complete and duplicate (in analogous figures and bars) Chopin's fingering drawn from FE. Additional indications are in bars 1-9, 12-13, 15-23, 27, 29-41, 44, 46-57, 61-69, 72, 74, 76-78, 80, 82-85, 90 and 93. In two places – in bars 81 and 86 – Fontana changed the fingering given in FE to another one, although also based on Chopin's fingering.

Certain additions to the fingering – in bars 12 and 48 – were also introduced in GE, which is a completely unique situation in the Etudes
