Fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE,EE)

Fingering written into FED

Our variant suggestion

Our alternative suggestion

All three sources including authentic fingering of this bar seem to be credible. It means that Chopin changed his mind twice in this respect, as the fingering of FE (→GE,EE) – different from the remaining ones – is later than the fingering of A and earlier than the annotation in FED.

  1. Probable interpretation of A and possible interpretation of FED.
The digits written in A generally determine the fingering of only the 1st group of semiquavers: 5215. Lack of further indications suggests the use of a similar scheme:

However, it cannot be excluded that in the 2nd and 3rd groups of semiquavers the fingering was meant to be different, the one as Chopin wrote while proofreading FE (see below, version 3).
  2. The fingering of FE (→GE,EE) is unambiguous:
  3. The fingering of FED and possible interpretation of A. Chopin's annotation changes only the digits printed in FE over the 2nd and 3rd semiquavers, which gives the following fingering (compatible with the indications of A):

However, it can be assumed that the lesson annotation was only a signal to change the fingering in all three groups, which leads to version 1.

In the main text we adopt a variant solution, in which we collate the digits featured in the sources. Additionally, we suggest a notation including all aforementioned fingering possibilities.
