According to us, the difference in placing the indication ritenuto reflects a discrepancy between two autographs. In the main text we give the indication after GE, which is based on the probably later autograph, [A2]

The indication  appears only in GE and EE2. It was probably an enhancement introduced by Chopin into [A2]. In EE2 it was certainly added on the basis of comparison with GE.

In FE (→EE) Cadenza was printed with normal-sized notes. A similar inaccurate reading of manuscripts can be found in the Mazurka in C major Op. 24 No. 2, bars 70-88, as well as in the Scherzo in B major Op. 31, bars 281-284.

This and two similar remarks in subsequent lines (one per each line) concern the differences in the presence of accidentals. We have included all situations in which at least one of the sources differs from the others, but in which the presence or absence of the sign does not raise any doubts, as far as the correct sound is concerned.
