Dots & slurs in PE

..

We give the indications of the portato articulation – dots and slurs – in bars 73 and 77, drawn from PE, in the main text. In the entire Polonaise, Chopin marked this manner of performing repeated notes with an utmost care.

The fingering of EF was probably added by Fontana.

 & other indications in PE

In the main text we give precise and clear dynamic markings of PE (ben attaccato is to be found in Variations in B Op. 2, bar 321). The indication  in EF was probably added by Fontana.

C-c in JC & EF

D-d in PE

..

The D-d octave in PE must be considered as an improvement in relation to the C-c octave, appearing in previous sources:

  • the bass movement makes this phrase similar to its predecessors in bars 62-63 and 70-71, while preserving the harmonic individuality (in each of the phrases the harmonic progression is different);
  • in the original version, the ninth ddid not have a continuation (it was unresolved), whereas in the later version, the same note only doubles the d bass note, which obviously resolves into c.

Our suggestion

..

Lack of pedalling markings in bar 75 must be considered as an inaccuracy of notation – cf. analogous bar 71. Therefore, in the main text we propose to complete it. Such pedalling is also featured in EF.
