b. 32-34

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

No signs in JC & EF

 in PE

..

Five  signs in those bars are present only in PE. We recreate them in the main text, yet we slightly change their position, as without any doubt, their range must remain in a legible relation to the ascending demisemiquaver motifs.

In the main text we give long accents on the basis of PE. In JC there are no signs, in EF the accents are short.

The sign of accent, visible only in PE, is reversed to the left. Therefore, its way of interpretation is not entirely clear. In the main text we propose an interpretation assuming an error of the sign's reversal.

dim. &  in PE

..

The authenticity of the dynamic indications of PE in this bar (dim., and ) is revealed by the insertion of the dim. indication inside the  hairpins, so characteristic of Chopin. The authenticity of the  sign in EF, defining a contrary concept, seems to be highly dubious in this case. See also the note in bar 34.

Wedge and slurred dots in PE

..

The articulation markings on the 1st and 2nd beats of both bars come from PE. Cf. bars 8-10. A combination of a wedge and the following it dots under a slur is often to be found in Chopin's works, e.g., in the Nocturne in D major, Op. 27 No. 2, bars 39-40.
