b. 1-3

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

No markings in JC

risoluto and accents in EF

Accents in PE

The indication risoluto, included only in EF, is most probably an addition of the editor. It does not exclude the accordance of that indication with the character of the introduction intended by Chopin (cf. characteristics of EF, as well as the remark concerning the tempo marking), which is revealed by, e.g., the accents, which in EF, despite different placement and shape, are undoubtedly compatible with the markings of PE, which most probably originate from [A]

The sources differ in the shape and placement of the accents on the 2nd beat of those bars (in JC there are no signs here). As far as the graphics is concerned, the authenticity of both vertical accents placed in PE above the upper pentagram and common accents between the pentagrams in EF does not raise any doubts – Chopin would frequently use both types of notation. In this context, they basically indicate the same performance, as the signs placed in both the first and second positions are to be considered as referring to the parts of both hands.

b. 1-2

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

The version of JC and EF is certainly earlier and perhaps totally erroneous due to misunderstanding of the short cut and probably unclear notation of [AI].

No slurs in JC & EF

Slurs in PE

..

We give slurs of PE. There is no reason to doubt their authenticity – it is one of numerous improvements of the notation of [A] (→PE), making it more precise, in comparison with [AI]

In JC, the third e1-gis a dotted crotchet, which is a patent error.
