b. 111-127

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

Cautionary sharps before the octaves on the 2nd beat of bars 111 and 127 were definitely (GE) or very probably (EE) added by revisers. Still, as we find them justified, we include them into the main text.

Rhythm in EE, GC (→GE1), and a contextual interpretation of FE

..

In FE this bar has 7 quavers as, despite the presence of a quaver rest, all the three octaves are written in crotchets. We think that this error should be corrected by adding quaver flags to the octaves at the beginning of the bar; this leads to the version compliant with EE and GC (→GE1). It is also the version that FE has in analogous bars 31 and 373.
The rhythm of GE2 here is absolutely arbitrary.

Two ties in EE

No ties in GC, GE2 & FE

Tied g in GE1

Our suggestion

..

The version with g sharp1 held and g sharp repeated, i.e. the one probably intended by Chopin (cf. similar bars 34-35 and 376-377) is not to be  found in any of the sources.  The reasons are probably accidental omissions (no ties in GC, GE2 and FE) and revisions (adding a tie sustaining g sharp in GE1 and probably in EE).

Slur in EE

Literal reading of GC (→GE1)

Markings in GC, contextual interpretation

Slur in FE

Markings in GE2

For our main text we adopt the version of GC. That version was also reproduced in GE, albeit inaccurately (the slur in bar 135) and it was additionally revised in GE2 (dots in the L.H. in bars 129-130). The notation of EE may also be considered a less accurate rendition of that version. The long slur of FE was added in print, probably at Chopin's request, and replaced a shorter one beginning from bar 134, which was definitely erroneous. That version should be therefore considered an alternative authentic approach to phrasing and articulation markings for that fragment.

b. 129-130

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

Staccato dots above the five octaves in the R.H. are found only in GC (→GE; #Wn2 also has dots below the L.H  octaves). EE does not have any markings in that fragment. FE has a slur running from the 2nd octave of bar 129 up to the beginning of bar 143. For that reason, variants of performance markings are included in the note to bars 129-139.
