Issues : Inaccuracies in FE

EE is the only source in which the slur for this phrase is in line with its musical sense and with slurring in numerous similar phrases. In FE the slur only reaches the chord in bar 202 and runs under the chords, which is a routine change of the graphic layout employed by engravers. In GC (→GE) the slur was omitted. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Placement of markings , FE revisions , Errors of GC |

As there is no reason for the pedalling in this passage to differ from that in analogous bars 183-185, we give precedence to the version of EE and GC (→GE). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE |

In FE, the indication leggiero has the abbreviated form (leggier.) and precedes the beginning of the quaver passage. In EE it is missing altogether, which may reflect the notation of the hand-written base text or may simply be an oversight. For our main text we take the notation of GC (inaccurately reproduced in GE). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccuracies in FE |

Differences in the extent of dynamic hairpins in bars 252-257 and 260-265 may at least partly result from inaccuracies. We adopt the version of FE as our main text, with some modifications in bars 253-254 and 261-262, as shortening of marks there may have been caused by ends of systems that fell between those bars in FE (the hairpin is longer wherever the relevant bar - such as 245 – is not at the end of the system). category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE |

The absence of pedal marks in GC (→GE) is most probably the copyist's error (see also note to bar 266). The pedalling of EE is probably authentic (cf. a similar solution in bars 268-271, confirmed both by EE and by GC). In FE, the placement of the in bar 259 seems doubtful and we consider it to be an inaccuracy almost certainly resulting from faulty understanding of the hand-written base text , as well as the lack of space around the note D1 (cf. bar 267). In our main text we suggest two, most probably authentic, versions of pedalling (EE and FE modified in bar 259 ) as variants. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Errors of GC |
