b. 14-15

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

The  lowering e1 to e flat is missing from both bars in GC and FE1. This obvious inaccuracy was corrected in GE and  FE2. The flat occurring in EE in bar 15 may also be part of the reviser's corrections (bar 14 in EE has no relevant note).

b. 99-102

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

4 short accents in EE

4 long accents in GC (→GE)

2 accents in FE

..

Missing accents in bars 101-102 in FE were probably omitted by oversight. EE has short accents here, just like almost everywhere else in that edition. GC (→GE) definitely have long accents.

b. 154-155

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

FE and GE have a double bar line between those bars. In the case of GE, this is definitely a revision (in GC, its base text, the bar line is single). This makes us suspect that the version of FE may also result from a routine editorial revision. Chopin used double bar lines infrequently and never treated them as necessarily connected with the change of key.

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slur in EE

No slur in GC (→GE)

Slur in FE

..

EE is the only source in which the slur for this phrase is in line with its musical sense and with slurring in numerous similar phrases. In FE the slur only reaches the chord in bar 202 and runs under the chords, which is a routine change of the graphic layout employed by engravers. In GC (→GE) the slur was omitted.

b. 201-207

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

cresc. in GC (→GE)

cresc. in EE

cresc. - - - in FE

..

In EE and FE the indication cresc. was placed under the hairpin mark . This is probably the revision introduced by editors, who could fear that the authentic notation (i.e. cresc. within the hairpin) preserved in GC and GE would prove illegible in print. Moreover, in FE the scope of the cresc. is delimited with dashes stretching until the end of bar 207, which seems to be a misunderstanding (cf. bar 211). As our main text we reproduce the authentic notation of GC (→GE), so characteristic of Chopin.
