composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

The version with g sharp1 held and g sharp repeated, i.e. the one probably intended by Chopin (cf. similar bars 34-35 and 376-377) is not to be found in any of the sources. The reasons are probably accidental omissions (no ties in GC, GE2 and FE) and revisions (adding a tie sustaining g sharp in GE1 and probably in EE). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , GE revisions |

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

The manner in which the indication rallentando is written is slightly different in different sources. EE has the abbreviation rallent. broken into syllables, which is an arbitrary manner typical for that edition. In FE, the abbreviation rall. was used, and in GE the dashes delimiting its scope were omitted. category imprint: Source & stylistic information issues: EE revisions |

b. 201-207

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

In EE and FE the indication cresc. was placed under the hairpin mark . This is probably the revision introduced by editors, who could fear that the authentic notation (i.e. cresc. within the hairpin) preserved in GC and GE would prove illegible in print. Moreover, in FE the scope of the cresc. is delimited with dashes stretching until the end of bar 207, which seems to be a misunderstanding (cf. bar 211). As our main text we reproduce the authentic notation of GC (→GE), so characteristic of Chopin. category imprint: Differences between sources; Source & stylistic information issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , FE revisions |

A cautionary before a2 was added in GE. The corresponding sign visible in EE is also probably the reviser's addition, yet surely justified in the context. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , GE revisions , Cautionary accidentals |

b. 291

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

In EE, the octave at the beginning of the bar is notated in the abbreviated form with 8. This is probably an arbitrary change that was introduced due to lack of space. category imprint: Source & stylistic information issues: EE revisions |
