Pedalling

b. 576-580

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No signs in EE & GC (→GE)

Pedalling in FE

..

Pedalling signs only present in FE may have been added by Chopin upon proofreading, which is furrther indicated by the lack of such signs in b. 608 and 612, which in the manuscript serving as the basis for FE, were most probably marked as repetitions of bars 576 and 580, and so should include the same performance markings.

b. 589-596

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No markings in EE

Pedalling in GC (→GE) & FE

..

No pedalling in these bars in EE is most probabbly a trace of the original version of this part.

Pedalling in EE

Our suggestion

..

The EE pedalling, which is not confirmed in the remaining sources, nor in the corresponding bars, may raise some doubts regarding its authenticity. We propose to add pedal marks in bars 608 and 612 analogous to bars 576 and 580, which we can find in FE. The fact that in GC bars  605-616 are marked as the repetition of bars 573-584 suggests that Chopin did not intend any differences in these parts.

b. 617-620

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No markings in EE

Pedalling in GC (→GE) & FE

..

Pedalling marked  in b. 617 and  in b. 620 as seen in GC (→GE) and FE most certainly repeat here Chopin's ultimate intention.

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Pedalling in EE

No markings in GC (→GE)

Pedalling in FE

Our suggestion

..

None of the sources provides correct pedalling in these bars. No  in EE (b. 632) and FE (b. 634) may only slightly mislead the performer as in both sources the moment of releasing (changing) pedals is marked with  (accordingly in bars 633 and 635). In GC (→GE) there is no pedalling until the end of the piece, which most certainly can be classified as the copyist's omission (in two last lines of the text 259-266 i 548-553).
