Disregarding the marks of GC (→GE) in bar 247 that are clearly different, all the remaining marks and dynamic indications for the passages in bars 243-270 may be divided into two groups:
- indications that point to the beginning of the 4th bar of the eight-bar "wave" as the culmination point. The dynamics is connected with the melody, as it emphasizes the highest note of the phrase. The increase phase is a little more than two bars long, the decrease phase has around 4 bars. We find such hairpins in EE (three times, in bars 251-270) and in FE (four times).
- marks that put accent on the beginning of the fifth bar, i.e. the middle point of the eight-bar section. The dynamics corresponds with rhythm, the increase and decrease phases are symmetrical. That version can be found in bars 243-249 in EE and three times (bars 251-270) in GC (→GE).
For our main text we choose in all cases to follow the notation of FE, the only source in which - apart from minor inaccuracies - the dynamic marks consistently belong to one of the two groups described above.
