Slurs
b. 4-5

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

The slur in the R.H., embracing the first four bars, reaches as far as the first note of bar 5 in A. However, connecting the initial four-bar section with the following phrase is very unnatural, both pianistically (change of register and the resulting change of hand position) and musically (evident separation of phrases underlined with the double bar line in bar 5). Therefore, considering the original notation of the slur to be imprecise, we assume that it embraces bars 1-4. This is how it was interpreted in GE (→FE→EE). We come across similar situations in some other places as well, e.g. in bars 22-23 and 49-50. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccurate slurs in A |

The extent of the slur in this bar in A is not clear. As slurs reaching grace notes are used only in exceptional cases, the slur in A may be interpreted as reaching the 2nd quaver or the crotchet on the 2nd beat of the bar. The comparison of all the 12 analogous bars point to the latter possibility. In GE (→FE→EE), the former solution was adopted. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccurate slurs in A |

In A, the extent of the slur is not quite clear. The interpretation adopted in GE (→FE→EE) is possible, yet in our opinion a longer slur, reaching the crotchet on the 2nd beat of the bar, is much more likely. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness issues: Inaccurate slurs in A |

In GE2 (→GE3), the end of the slur was moved to the 2nd quaver d2, probably as a result of comparing that place with the notation of GE1 found in most analogous bars. Cf. the note concerning bar 6. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: GE revisions |

Despite the fairly unambiguous notation of A, in GE (→FE→EE) the end of the slur was placed earlier, above the second quaver b1. Cf. the note to bar 6. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE |
