b. 172-175

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Arrangement of voices in A

Arrangement of voices in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In the main text we provide the L.H. part as written by Chopin in A. GE (→FE,EE,IE) arbitrarily changed the layout of the quaver beams and flags to make it symmetrical with the R.H. part. According to us, the notation used in the editions, although inauthentic, seems to be better suited for the representation of the organisation of voices in this place, in particular emphasising the sequence in the bass as a separate voice is more natural than emphasising the tenor voice.

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

energico between staves in A

energico below L.H. part in GE (→EE,IE)

No indication in FE

..

A look at the dense GE1 notation allows us to say that the energico indication was placed in GE (→EE,IE) under the L.H. part only due to the lack of space between the staves. In FE the indication was omitted, probably due to inadvertence.

into b. 173 in A

in b. 172 after GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The change of the range of the  hairpin in GE (→FE,EE,IE) was partially forced by the lack of space for extending the mark in bar 173. In the main text we adhere to the range written by Chopin in A.

b. 174

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

In A Chopin omitted the naturals to the 2nd and 3rd L.H. quavers (a1 and A); on the other hand, he wrote unnecessarily repeated naturals to a2 on the 3rd quaver and to e2 on the 7th R.H. quaver. In GE (→FE,EE,IE) the omitted accidentals were added and the unnecessary ones removed, which we include in the main text. Moreover, in the editions cautionary flats were added to B and b2 (the 5th quaver). We also include these accidentals in the main text.

b. 175

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

At the beginning of the bar, Chopin entered into A a cautionary  to a. GE (→FE,EE,IE) added a  also to a2 in the R.H.
In the 2nd half of the bar the  to g is missing in A. The accidental was added in GE (→FE,EE,IE), yet it was erroneously placed only just before the last quaver.
