b. 1

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt II

= 60 in A (→GEFE)

= 80 in EE

No marking in IE

..

The higher value in the metronome marking is most probably due to a mistake by the EE1 engraver. Similarly, we consider the absence of the entire marking in IE to be an oversight.

b. 1

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt II

 in bar 1 in A

 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In the main text we keep the Chopinesque A notation, in which , although slightly closer to the bottom stave, probably refers to the parts of both hands. The clarification in GE (→FE,EE,IE), certainly compliant with the performance resulting from the A text, can be considered rational and regarded as a practical variant, drawing our attention to the quasi-canon-like dialogue between the hands.
As far as the position of the mark is concerned, either in the upbeat or at the beginning of bar 1, both can be found in Chopin's pieces (cf., e.g. the Etude in A, Op. 25 No. 1 and in A minor, Op. 25 No. 4), sometimes even within the same piece, e.g. in the Mazurka in C minor, Op. 30 No. 1. Although it is difficult to guess what Chopin's motivation was when choosing one of the versions, it does not seem essentially important, practically speaking.

b. 7

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt II

 in A (→GEFE,IE)

No markings in EE1

in EE2

..

The omission of both  marks is a mistake by the EE1 engraver, who committed several mistakes in this and the next three bars. In EE2  was added here, which Chopin used much less often. The same applies to bar 39.

The omission of  in FE and of  and  in EE must be the engravers' mistakes.

b. 24

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt II

 &  in A

 & accent in GE (→FE,EE)

 &  in IE

..

Unlike in the previous two bars, the mark resembling an accent is written in A under the rest and before . Therefore, it is a short diminuendo hairpin, and this is how we reproduce this notation in the main text. In GE (→FE,EE) the mark was moved to the 3rd beat of the bar, as in the preceding bars. In IE it was reproduced inaccurately, achieving a version generally compliant with A (yet almost certainly accidentally).
