b. 83

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedal change in A (→GE)

Half-bar pedal in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

Both source versions of the pedalling in the 2nd half of this bar must be authentic. A similar difference is to be observed in analogous bar 170, in which, however, there is a pedal change on the 4th crotchet in the bar in FE (in A Chopin deleted it). Not being certain about Chopin's final decision in these bars (if there was any at all!), in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 84-85

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slur to end of b. 84 in A (contextual interpretation→GE) & EE

Slur to b. 85 in FE

..

The A slurs are unclear in this place – the ending of the slur in bar 84 reaches beyond the bar line, but it does not suggest that it should be led to the 1st quaver in bar 85. Therefore, the interpretation of FE – via [FC] – is wrong, which is additionally supported by the unanimous A versions in analogous bars 171-172 and, above all, 251-252, in which Chopin clearly marked the ending of the slur on the last quaver in bar 251, deleting the initially written ending, reaching too far. As in bars 80-81, in EE the FE slur was considered inaccurate and shortened – in this case almost certainly rightly so.

The correction visible in A shows that the R.H. 3rd and 4th crotchets were initially c1-g1 and e1-a1.

b. 84

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

in A (→GE) & EE2

No sign in FE (→EE1)

..

As in bar 81, the  hairpin was most probably added to A after [FC] had been finished, which explains its absence in FE (→EE1). In EE2 the mark was added after comparing it with GE1.

b. 85

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

..

The deleted version of the L.H. minim chord in A reveals that the middle note was initially a B.
