b. 251

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

f1 in A (→GE)

d1 in FE (→EE)

..

In FE (→EE) the version of the bottom note of the 3rd quaver most probably resulted from Chopin's proofreading, which is indicated by the traces of corrections performed in print here. However, it is difficult to say what was being corrected, hence we cannot say that Chopin replaced the A sixth with the FE octave. Both versions are musically justified, both in terms of sound and voice leading, hence they can be considered equal variants. In the main text we give the version of the principal source, A.

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

..

In A and FE1 there is no  to the bottom note of the 7th quaver (g). If Chopin had wanted a g here, he would have certainly marked it with a natural. The mistake was corrected in FE2 (→EE) and GE.

b. 254

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

f-d1-a1 in A (→GE) & FE1

f-d1-b1 in FE2 (→EE)

..

The A (→GE) and FE1 version is probably Chopin's mistake – the chord is written there in bass clef, while with a greater number of ledger lines, Chopin would relatively often write one too many or one too less. This assumption is confirmed by the changes introduced at the stage of proofreading FE2 (→EE), almost certainly at Chopin's request.
