b. 42

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

..

In GE1 there is a crotchet rest on the top stave at the beginning of the bar. The mistake resulted from confusing this bar with bar 43. See the note above.

b. 42

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slur in A (→GE) & EE2

No slur in FE

..

The missing slur in FE must be an oversight by the copyist or by the engraver. The slur was added by EE, most probably by analogy with previous motifs.

b. 43

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

in A (→GE)

No marking in FE (→EE)

..

The absence of  in FE (→EE) can be explained in many different ways, which we sort by likelihood (from most to least likely, according to us):

  • the mark was overlooked by the copyist in [FC] or by the engraver of FE1;
  • Chopin added it to A after [FC] had already been finished;
  • the mark was removed by Chopin in [FC];
  • Chopin removed it while proofreading FE1 (no visible traces of such a procedure).

In this situation, taking into account the first two possibilities and the authority of the principal source, we give  directly in the main text.

Similarly, in bar 54.

The change of  to  is a very common inaccuracy in Chopin's editions by M. Schlesinger – see note in bar 43.

 in FE1

..

The change of  to  is a very common inaccuracy in Chopin's editions by M. Schlesinger – see note to Etude in C, Op. 10 No. 1. At this point, the alleged change of marking would only be a reminder of the time signature in force from the beginning of the piece. The error was corrected – perhaps at Chopin's request – in FE2 (→EE).
