b. 187

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

No slur in FE

Slur in GE & EE

..

The missing slur must be considered a defect of notation. Therefore, in the main text we include the slur added in GE and EE.

b. 191-195

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

In the G passages in bar 191, 193 and 195 a number of flats to g and d tones are missing in FE – out of the 6 accidentals that should be in each of these bars, in FE there are only the first two in bar 191, the first three in bar 193 and the 2nd and the 3rd one in bar 195. In bar 191 and 195 the notation is incomplete even if we assumed that an accidental is valid at a given pitch both in the presence of an octave sign and without it. Nevertheless, the text is perfectly obvious, hence in GE and EE a  was added only at the beginning of bar 195 (d3). Similar deficiencies are to be found in bar 192, 194 and 196.

3 fingering digits, first one 2 in FE (→GE)

4 digits, first one 3 in EE

..

In EE the Chopinesque fingering was supplemented by a digit over the 6th semiquaver. The indicated 5th finger is a natural consequence of the authentic fingering and – as was the case with the previous additions – almost certainly does not come from Chopin. On the other hand, the digit '2' placed in EE over the 1st semiquaver, indicating the 3rd finger in the English system, must be a mistake committed while changing the system of markings.
(In our transcriptions, we replace the English fingering markings by the contemporary ones – see General Editorial Principles, p. 10.)

Alternating wedges & staccato dots in FE

staccato dots in GE

Wedge & dot in b. 194-195 in EE

..

Chopin alternately marked the figuration bass notes with wedges and staccato dots. In the remaining editions the markings were reproduced inaccurately:

  • in GE wedges were changed to dots (as in the entire Variations – see bar 7), while the dot in bar 193 was probably overlooked;
  • in EE the markings in bars 192-193 were omitted, probably due to distraction – they appear in a new line.

b. 192-195

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

The 5th quaver in each of these bars is devoid of an accidental, which is a patent oversight. In the main text we add the necessary flats lowering d1 to d1.
