b. 151

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

No fingering in FE (→GE)

'2' added in EE

..

In EE one fingering digit was added, completely apparent in this context. It is difficult to imagine that Chopin would have wanted to deal with such a minor detail.

b. 152

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

5 digits, last one 2 in FE

5 digits, last one 1 in GE

4 digits in EE

..

As in the preceding bar, in EE a completely apparent fingering digit was added over the 2nd semiquaver. On the other hand, two other digits were omitted in the ending of this phrase. The erroneous digit in GE could be explained by the engraver's mistake or, which seems more likely, by a later correction of a mistake committed first in FE and repeated in GE.

b. 153

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Triad g1-b1-d2 in FE

Fifth g1-d2 in GE & EE

..

Neither GE nor EE include b1, which means that it was almost certainly added by Chopin in the last stage of proofreading FE – after the copies serving as the bases for GE and EE had been sent. It was most probably a correction in the strict sense – the omission of this note was just a mistake.

b. 153

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

d2 in chord in FE (→EE)

c2 in chord in GE

..

Both versions are musically satisfying, in all respects; we cannot say anything definitive about possible corrections either – two possibilities could be likely: a change in the last stage of proofreading FE (→EE) and possible Chopinesque proofreading of GE. On the other hand, one cannot exclude a mistake by the GE engraver, who could have considered the middle notes of the last two chords to be identical (the discussed note is placed in FE too low). In the main text we provide the undoubtedly authentic FE version, perhaps the latest one. The GE version can be regarded as a potentially authentic variant.

b. 155-165

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

In this entire fragment, in the key of D minor, in FE 9 out of 21 necessary naturals raising e to e, in different octaves, were omitted. In GE and EE some of them were added. The context rules out any doubts as to the sound of the notes devoid of naturals. In bars 166-167 3 more naturals were omitted.
