Dotted crotchet in FE (→EE)

Crotchet & rest in GE

The absence of clear traces of proofreading in FE and GE makes it difficult to say how this discrepancy arose. The following scenarios can be suggested:

  1. FE proofreading from the version preserved in GE – traces of removal of rests in FE cannot be ruled out. Both versions are authentic, with the FE one being later.
  2. Change in GE from the FE version, probably Chopinesque, as in the FE text there is no reason for the reviser's intervention. The FE version is authentic, the GE one – possibly.
  3. GE revision of an erroneous FE version, e.g. without augmentation dots and rests. In FE this deficient version was eventually corrected. The only authentic one is the FE version.

Taking into account the unquestionable authenticity of the FE version, we provide it in the main text. The GE version, possibly authentic, can be regarded as an acceptable variant.
