Crotchet & minim in PE

Minim in GE

Crotchet, our alternative suggestion

..

In PE there is a crotchet with a rest in bar 92, while in bar 92/116 – a minim. One of the versions is most probably erroneous; however, there is not sufficient evidence to decide which one. To the main text we choose the minim, since the repetition of the section encompassing bars 89-96 seems to have been reproduced slightly more accurately – cf. the notes on fingering (bar 89) and the slur (bars 95-96). This version was introduced in GE

Different slurs in sources

Slur to A1 in sources (b. 95)

Slur to G1 in sources (b. 95/119)

..

In the sources the slur in bar 95 encompasses only this bar, while in bar 95/119 reaches G in the next bar. Interpreting the range of Chopinesque slurs may be quite troublesome, hence such a difference most probably means that in the manuscript the slur ended ambiguously, and the publisher – consciously or not – reproduced it twofold in the copy of [A] prepared as the basis. Both versions can be considered equivalent, and to the main text we choose the longer slur as being more natural at the end of a phrase.
A similar problem concerns the  hairpin in these bars.

Different  in PE

Different  in GE

 suggested by the editors

..

In PE the range of the  hairpin differs slightly in bars 95-96 and 119. As was the case with the L.H. slur in this place (see the note below), it probably resulted from imprecise notation of [A]. The difference does not affect the performance, hence to the main text we adopt the version that in PE occurs together with the slur we chose. In GE the mark in bar 95 was moved, most probably due to the transition to a new line starting from bar 96.

b. 96-97

composition: WN 29, Waltz in E minor

..

In PE both bar 96 and bar 120 fall at the end of the page, and on the next page, the curved line that seems to be a tie to b is not continued. We assume that this is the meaning of this curved line, as it was assumed in GE, in which bars 96-97 fall within the line (in bars 120-121 GE repeated the inaccurate version of PE).
