In PE there is a crotchet with a rest in bar 92, while in bar 92/116 – a minim. One of the versions is most probably erroneous, but it seems impossible to say which one, since both are musically justified:
- a crotchet, compliant with the version of bar 90, constitutes an ending to the quaver passage, regarded as a certain autonomous pianistic gesture, independent of the R.H. rhythmic values and the way the continuation on the 3rd beat of the bar is carried out;
- a minim naturally complements the R.H. chord, and the value of this note having been shortened in bar 90 is to be related to the need to move the hand to play C
on the 3rd beat of the bar.
In both cases it is easy to provide a possible mistake mechanism – when placing a crotchet, the engraver could have been influenced by the L.H. rhythm in bar 90, whereas when placing a minim, he could have repeated the R.H. rhythm he saw above.
The difference in fingering in bar 89 and in its repetition could serve as a hint – the correct version appears the second time, which could point to impaired concentration the first time and would be an argument for the minim. Therefore, in the main text we give the minim from bar 92/116 (it is the version of GE), considering the crotchet an equal variant.
