Slurs

b. 55-59

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The slurs in A (→GE) in bars 55-59 begin from the 2nd crotchet in the R.H. and end at the end of the bar. In FE and EE the slurs comprise the entire bars of the L.H. – perhaps it is a residue of the original notation or it stems from imprecise slurs in the base text. FE is lacking the slur in bar 59, which is certainly an oversight.

b. 58

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The slur in EE, which ends at the penultimate grace note, may be a result of Chopin's slurring, which is often imprecise, and the literal – in this particular case – interpretation of the autograph (base text). As far as the performance is concerned, the difference is not significant. FE is lacking the slur.

Lack of the 2nd slur in the L.H. in FE may be considered as an oversight.

The slur in A undoubtedly concerns the deleted original version. The interpretation of the slur made in GE – most probably on the basis of analogous figures – is certainly correct. The slurs in FE and EE are rather inaccurate (cf. bars 55-59).
