Fingering in A

Wedge in FE (→EE)

Wedges in GE

Our variant suggestion

..

The wedges over and are a result of a mistake of the engraver of FE, who misinterpreted the '1's of the fingering. The first of them was removed in the last proofreading of FE (→EE), yet in GE it remained unchanged. In the main text we give the fingering after A, yet we leave the inclusion of the digit over to the performer's discretion, as in subsequent, similar figures (bars 4, 6, 8), Chopin did not once repeat it and it cannot be excluded that it referred to the original version of this fragment.

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Different interpretation of slurs in A

No slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The range and possible divisions of slurs in A are unclear. We suggest two possible interpretations. Perhaps it was the uncertainty concerning this issue that was the reason for the omission of the slurs in bars 3-5 in FE (→GE,EE). In this kind of rhythmically homogeneous, virtuoso figuration, possible breaks in slurs on the main beats of the bar do not influence the performance.

d1 in A (→GE), FE2 & EE2 (→EE3)

d1 in FE1 (→EE1)

..

The absence of a  lowering d1 to dis certainly an oversight of the engraver of FE1 (→EE1). The mistake was corrected in FE2 and EE2 (→EE3).

b. 2

composition: Op. 28 No. 10, Prelude in C♯ minor

..

In FE1 the 4th and 5th semiquavers of the bar are b1-a1. It must be a mistake – it is likely that the engraver was influenced by the structure of the previous and the next two figures. The error was rectified in FE2; it is also all the remaining sources that include the correct version, analogous to b. 6 and 14.

Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

..

In the main text in bar 3 we give the fingering from A without brackets. It was also reproduced in FE (→GE), however, omitting, probably inadvertently, the last digit. This reduced fingering version is also in EE, in which it was additionally repeated in analogous bar 11. Moreover, that edition adds digits in the further part of bar 3. In the main text, apart from the digits drawn from A, we consider a different fingering written by Chopin in bars 3-4 in FED.
